About Campaign
Kalpavriksha Welfare Society is raising funds to provide specially adapted wheelchairs and critical financial assistance to families caring for children with cerebral palsy across Darjeeling’s challenging mountain terrain.
What is Cerebral Palsy?
Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of permanent movement disorders that appear in early childhood. It is caused by abnormal brain development or damage to the developing brain that affects a person’s ability to control their muscles. This neurological condition:
- Typically occurs before, during, or shortly after birth
- Affects muscle tone, movement, and motor skills
- Varies widely in severity and specific symptoms from person to person
- Is non-progressive, meaning the brain damage does not worsen over time, though symptoms may change
- Is not contagious and cannot be passed from one generation to another
- Has no cure, but various treatments and therapies can significantly improve quality of life
Severe Effects of Cerebral Palsy
Children with severe cerebral palsy may experience multiple challenges that impact daily life:
Physical Limitations: Difficulty with basic movements including sitting, standing, and walking; may require mobility aids like specialized wheelchairs.
Communication Challenges: Speech difficulties or inability to speak, requiring alternative communication methods
Additional Health Complications: May include seizures, intellectual disability, vision or hearing impairments, and difficulties with eating and swallowing.Respiratory Issues: Increased risk of pneumonia and other respiratory infections due to difficulty swallowing and weakened respiratory muscles.
Musculoskeletal Problems: Joint contractures, hip dislocations, and scoliosis often requiring surgical interventions
Sensory Processing Difficulties: Heightened or diminished sensory responses affecting interaction with the environment
Financial Burden: Ongoing therapies, medical appointments, specialized equipment, and medications create significant economic strain on families
Social Isolation: Children and their families may face reduced community participation due to physical barriers, transportation challenges, and societal stigma
In the unique Himalayan context of Darjeeling, these challenges are further magnified by:
- Remote locations with difficult terrain making travel to medical facilities exceptionally challenging
- Limited specialized healthcare services requiring families to travel long distances for appropriate care
- Harsh weather conditions that can restrict mobility during certain seasons
- Traditional housing structures that may not accommodate accessibility needs
Your support helps address these complex challenges with solutions specifically designed for our mountain communities.
Purpose of the Campaign
Children with cerebral palsy in Darjeeling’s remote Himalayan communities face extraordinary challenges. Beyond the physical limitations of their condition, they contend with mountainous terrain, limited accessibility infrastructure, and financial constraints that prevent access to proper care. Many families struggle with the high costs of ongoing therapy, specialized equipment, and transportation to medical facilities.
Through this campaign, Kalpavriksha Welfare Society aims to bridge these gaps by providing customized mobility solutions and financial support tailored to each child’s specific needs. We believe every child deserves the opportunity to participate in community life with dignity, regardless of physical challenges or economic circumstances.
