Pension Support Program for elders
A structured six-month program launching pension support for four vulnerable senior citizens in Darjeeling, establishing a sustainable financial safety net while creating a replicable model for elder economic security.
About the Event
Kalpavriksha Welfare Society’s Senior Citizen Support Network is inaugurating a dedicated pension assistance program for four identified elderly community members facing severe financial hardship, with regular disbursements continuing through December 2024.
Purpose of the Event
Many elderly residents in Darjeeling face acute financial vulnerability after a lifetime of service to their families and communities. Having worked in informal sectors without retirement benefits, or having outlived their savings, these seniors now struggle to meet basic needs for food, medicine, and shelter. This precarious situation compromises their dignity, health, and independence during what should be their golden years. Our pension support initiative addresses this critical need by providing regular, reliable financial assistance to four carefully selected seniors who represent the broader challenges faced by Darjeeling’s elderly population. Beyond the immediate financial relief, this program establishes a framework for expanding elder support services, documenting the impact of consistent income on senior wellbeing, and advocating for improved government pension schemes. By demonstrating a successful model of community-based elder support, we create a pathway for sustainable solutions to senior financial insecurity.
Goal of the Event
The Senior Citizen Pension Program aims to provide consistent monthly financial support to four elderly community members from July through December 2024, with each recipient receiving ₹1,500 monthly. Beyond this direct assistance, our goals include: documenting improvements in nutrition, healthcare access, and quality of life among recipients; connecting participants with additional government benefits and community resources; developing a sustainable funding model for program expansion; establishing efficient distribution systems adaptable to various geographic and mobility challenges; creating a compelling case study demonstrating elder support impact; and raising community awareness about senior financial vulnerability. This initial phase with four recipients serves as a pilot to refine processes, measure outcomes, and build the foundation for a larger-scale program serving more seniors throughout the Darjeeling region.
